I thought my horse didn't do any tricks, but after reading this I just realized she does the beginnings of a few. She picks up her feed bucket. She 'smiles' if I scratch her withers. She lifts her feet really easily. I'm going to start working on these areas. Thanks.

Hi Patti,
Yes I think Trigger chose me too :-)
Smart horses tend to get bored with doing the usual things and this can sometimes lead to them developing nuisance habits. Tricks are a great way to keep their brains active and for them (and you) to really enjoy the time you spend together. Every week you can be trying something different. After years of teaching tricks I am still coming up with fun things to do with Trigger - it's endless really :-)
Your new horse sounds a natural. Willing to learn and quick to catch on. She will really benefit from some trick training :-)

Hello,
I recently acquired a new horse. Large paint mare. She was at a horse dealer in our area. My friends asked me if I had ever been there. I said no, but had a horse for many years now that originally came from there so let's go...There were lots of horses there. I wasn't in the market for a new horse as I already have 4. I promise you, I DID NOT CHOOSE THIS HORSE. SHE CHOSE ME! Well, I spoke to the old owner of this mare, Pep, and he told me she was his trail horse. Nothing more, nothing less, but a good trail horse. We began working with her on the ground and I discovered that she is extremely smart, a good thinker, a people horse, picks everything up quickly and retains it all! I have a special horse here....
Today, I did the treat between her front legs to bow thing. She went for it with no reservation. After a few times, I simply reached between her front legs and down she went. I want to teach her tricks....Can you help?

Hi Sunrise, yes if little kids are going to be riding your mini then I wouldn't teach him to rear - just to be safe. I always teach my horses that unless they are asked to do a trick they don't get a reward and this discourages them doing unwanted tricks. But a kid may give them a trick cue by mistake and your horse will think he is being asked to do the trick. I also find that when I first start teaching a horse tricks he will sometimes try to do several unasked tricks when he/she sees me in the hope that they will get a reward. It's usually funny but in this situation it could be dangerous.

You can use the same method to teach a trick as you can to teach loads of other useful things, like standing square and staying. I had a huge 16.2hh thoroughbred that would chase a ball and bring it back to me. He loved this game! Some horses aren't good fetchers, just like some dogs. Trigger, my current trick horse is very relaxed and a bit lazy and he thinks fetch is a bit too much like hard work. However he is brilliant at bowing, lying down and staying... all tricks that don't take much energy :-)

This sounds awesome looking forward to the ebook!
i'd like to teach my mini lots of things like rear on command. but i worry that if i teach him something like that then he might just go and do it when some little kid is on his back and totally freak it out! do i have to worry about that?
I really want to teach him to stand (square) and STAY. then come when called like a dog and play with my dog with a ball or tug toy. they play as it is but its more like chaseys
cool found you on face book

Hi Judy, Sounds like a great idea. He will get used to things around his legs in an environment where he feels safe, before you head out into the big world. Trigger and I live in Australia and I buy my pool noodles from a shop called Go-Lo. It's a chain store that sells lots of cheap items. They are about $2.00 each and can be used for teaching your horse lots of different things. They are also available from pool shops but are usually more expensive. Good luck with the training. Jain & Trigger.

Hi

Do you know where I can get cheap pool noodles. My horse has a problem on the trail with brushy areas in rushing thru piles of brush and sticks. I saw your training tip and thought maybe this would help him to put a few in his stall for him to tramp on and they fly up and hit him in the legs. I would be supervising him of course and only let him w/them for short periods of time as he would probably start trying to eat them) Thanks Judy

What a neat idea!

I've been toying with the idea of constructing a car wash out of an old tarp.

However, pool noodles would be even easier to set up and take down and would be easier for the horse to get use to at first. Thanks for sharing!

cheers,

Mary
(who is now off to see if she can find any pool noodles for sale in December!)
